Overview

A car loan is a purpose-bound instalment loan for buying a car, motorbike or camper. Because the purpose is fixed, banks often offer better terms than for general-purpose loans.

The term should match how long you plan to use the vehicle. Some banks hold the registration certificate part II as security until the loan is repaid in full.

FAQ

Can I finance a used car?

Yes. Many banks finance used cars; some apply an age limit to the vehicle. We check this for your specific offer.

How does this differ from dealer financing?

With a bank loan you are a cash buyer at the dealer and can negotiate discounts. Dealer financing can also be attractive – what matters is comparing the total cost.

Do I need a down payment?

Not necessarily. A down payment does reduce the loan amount, instalment and interest cost.

What happens to the registration certificate?

Depending on the bank, part II may be held as security and returned to you once the loan is repaid.

Please note: a loan is a commitment for years. Only borrow what you could repay safely even if your circumstances change. Over-indebtedness can harm your creditworthiness for a long time.
